THE RACE
SUMMARY
‘The race’ is an interesting story written by the famous Indian
writer Nisha Punjabi. It is the story of an athlete boy named
Tarun.
Tarun was weak in his studies. But he had an intense wish to
become the fastest runner in the world. An intensive training
was necessary to achieve his dream. But he had no
money.Moreover his parents hated sports and wanted him to
concentrate on his studies.The only way to achieve his goal
was to practice very hard.
One day his father got angry with him for failing in his
terminal examination. His friends made fun of him. This made
him very sad. To overcome this, he went to the park and
started running around. When he was tired, he sat on a bench.
The great athlete and Olympian, Ram Narayan was watching
him all the time. He told Tarun that he would train him. But
there was one condition. Tarun should win the race on
Children’s Day at Nehru park. Tarun took it as a challenge.
He practised hard for 1000mtr race.
The day of the race arrived. Tarun was far ahead of
everybody. But he slipped and fell down again and again. But
he got up and ran again. His mother and RamNarayan
encouraged him from the gallery. Though he was the last, he
finished the race. The crowd cheered him for his
determination. Ram Narayan told Tarun that he had won the
toughest race-the race of his life.
ACTIVITIES
1.Character sketch of Tarun
Tarun was a 12yr old boy. He was average in his studies. He
had no artistic qualities. But he was a good athlete. He wanted
to be the fastest runner in the world. But he had no idea how
to achieve his dream, as his family had no money to practice
him. His parents hated his running and wanted him to
concentrate on his studies.When he failed in the exam, he was
teased by everyone. Ram Narayan told Tarun that he would
train him on one condition. He should win the race that was
going to be conducted in Nehru park on the Children’s day.
Tarun decided to win the race. He wanted to show his father
that he was not the black sheep of the family. When the race
started,Tarun saw himself far ahead of everybody.He felt
proud of himself. But he fell down. Without wasting time, he
got up and ran once more. He fell down two more times. But
he had a special mind setup. So he got up and finished the
race. When he crossed the finishing line last, the whole crowd
cheered him for his determination and valour.
2.Announcement
Ladies and Gentlemen,
We welcome all of you to Govt.school, Aluva, for a
congratulatory function arranged to honour Master Tarun
who has raised the fame of our school up in the sky. The
function will start at 11a.m. tomorrow. Nobody from our
village has ever participated or won any prize in a sports event
like this. So let’s gather together and congratulate the valour,
determination and spirit of the real athlete in him. We invite
all of you to Govt.school, Aluva.

Monday
What a tragic situation it was! I have never faced such failures
in my life. Ofcourse I have failed in the exams. But the shame
and pain were less. Only my classmates knew it. But today so
many people were on the ground. It was all because of my
pride.My teacher had told me ‘Pride goes before the fall’. How
true it is! He also told me ‘Failures are the stepping stones to
success’. That also has come true.The great athlete Ram
Narayan has agreed to train me.That is something great.

Date - FELICITATION FOR TARUN (SPEECH)
A warm goodmorning to everyone!
PrincipalHonourable dignitaries and my dear teachers and friends,
It is a day of pride for everyone of us. Our dearest friend
Tarun is selected to be a trainee under the honourable
Olympian Ram Narayan. We had invited Ram Narayan also
for this function but he had to go to Delhi to attend an urgent
meeting. I make use of this opportunity to congratulate Tarun.
I know him and his family well. He has many difficulties in his
studies. A few days ago he shared his sorrow with me.He was
very sad because he failed in two subjects.
Many of us witnessed the race. He fell down thrice. But the
most appreciable thing was that all the three times he got up
and ran and completed the race.He had set his goal. Though
he didn’t win the race, he was selected as a trainee of the
Olympian Ram Narayan. That is something greater than
winning the game.So, on behalf of everyone present here,I
congratulate Tarun.
The lesson we get from him is that if we set our goal, nothing
can prevent us from attaining that goal. So let’s follow his
path, set our goals and move forward. Success is ours! I
remain.
